The trek to Everest Base Camp is an incredibly rewarding journey that offers excitement, serenity, and entertainment all at once. Nestled in the upper region of Sagarmatha National Park in the Everest area, it provides travelers with an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step foot on the base of some of the tallest mountain ranges on earth, including Mt. Everest (8849 mtr.) and Mt. Lhotse (8516 mtr.). The Everest region boasts around 300 mountains that are both massive and picturesque in appearance. This area gained popularity after the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, which is still considered one of the greatest human achievements in adventure history.
Our journey commences with an adventurous flight to Lukla airport, which is renowned as one of the world's most dangerous airports and is also called Tenzing-Hillary airport. Despite its perilous location at an elevation of 2800m, Lukla airport has become a popular attraction in itself. Lukla (2860 mtr.) is a small town that offers modern amenities and trekking necessities to the trekkers heading towards Everest. The route then takes us along the Dudh Koshi river, which meanders through hills with numerous bends and twists until we reach Namche Bazaar (3446 mtr.). Namche Bazaar is a remote yet fascinating place for tourists due to its unique and dense amphitheater-style settlement, which overlooks Mt. Thamserku (6623 mtr.). The trek then continues through the small Sherpa hamlets of Tengboche (3860 mtr.), Pangboche (3985 mtr.), Dingboche (4410 mtr.), Gorakshep (5164 mtr.), and finally arrives at a narrow valley filled with rock boulders, sand, and river deposits, all flowing down from the famous Khumbu glacier. As you trek through the Everest region, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the base of the world's highest mountain.
If you happen to visit during the Spring or Autumn, you may also spot the camps of climbers attempting to reach the summit of Everest. This region has a unique atmosphere and attracts trekkers with its diverse range of rare plant and animal species that thrive at high altitudes. It is not uncommon to see animals such as the Himalayan Monal, Musk Deer, Snow Leopard, and Himalayan Tahr after passing through Namche Bazaar. The Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976, is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it an ideal destination for naturalists and researchers.
National geographic has recognized Sagarmatha National Park as an exceptional destination for stargazing due to its breath taking night sky. When you reach above Namche Bazaar, be sure to observe the stars or planets as there are countless wonders to discover.
The Khumbu region, which is the upper section of the Everest region, is home to the Sherpa people, who are renowned worldwide for their daring climbing skills and ability to survive at high altitudes. The Sherpa people lead a unique life that distinguishes them from other Nepalese communities. With a culture and lifestyle similar to that of Tibetans, they are known for their hospitality and friendliness. Manirimdu, their most prominent festival, is a 19-day celebration and procession held in October each year. If you plan to trek to Everest Base Camp during October, you may want to schedule your trip to coincide with this festival.
